  • Staying at SMC

SMC offers a unique summer opportunity for a different lifestyle, team working environment, communal experience and personal growth. Below you find some more information about the practical realities of volunteering at SMC.
  • We live, eat and work in close proximity to our guests that join us at SMC. Since we offer a mindful and supportive retreat environment we ask staff and volunteers to use dignified speech and presentable attire, and generally being helpful and customer friendly. What does customer service mean to you?
Set-up and take-down volunteers will live in gender specific dorms or large shared tents depending on the season. While you may have the tent for yourself, please also plan on having a tent mate. The volunteer campground is located approx. 15 minutes walk across uneven terrain. Volunteers bring their own bedding.
We have gender specific bathhouses with divided showers. You will share the bathhouse with other community members and volunteers. We also have a gender neutral option for showering.
You will get three prepared meals per day, coffee, tea, fruit, and snacks. Meat is offered at some meals. Each meal will contain vegetarian, vegan, and wheat-free options. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate any other dietary needs.
  • Please review the previous sections about living at SMC and let us know your questions, concerns or potential challenges. We are happy to clarify information and finding solutions that work for you.
  • Personal Wellbeing and Community Living

  • Why are you interested in volunteering at Shambhala Mountain Center?
  • Please describe your contemplative practice, training or experience. Have you meditated before?
  • We do not live in a monastic setting. On weekends or after work is done you may structure your time independently eg. go hike, attend optional community offerings, practice sessions or take personal space. It is also helpful to have a car if you like to explore the river and canyon, or drive to town. Other volunteers may be able to give you a ride. How does this independent setting work for you?
  • What challenges do you foresee living in a community? What challenges could you encounter when living in a remote mountain environment?
  • SMC Policies and Procedures

In order to respect and protect the comfort of all volunteers the quiet hours start at 9pm. The volunteer campground and dorms are drug-free zones, with limited, mindful use of alcohol permitted. Do you agree to observe this policy?
  • Please review our Code of Ethics and Values.

The Code of Ethics is an integral part of SMC culture and was developed in response to allegations against the spiritual leader of the worldwide Shambhala organization and others in the broader Shambhala community. You can learn more about these allegations and SMC’s responses on our webpage in the About- Misconduct section. Please bring any questions that arise if you are selected for an interview.
